Film Analysis – Grand Torino To give a bit of an overview, the movie â€Å"Gran Torino† was directed and produced by Clint Eastwood who also starred in the movie. This movie highlights the modern conditions surrounding many aspects of intercultural communications. Clint Eastwood plays Walt Kowolski whose wife just died and who is a Korean War veteran. He has a difficult time getting along with people do not hold the same views or values that he does. He lives in an era that he doesn’t understand and lives close to many Hmong immigrants and in a neighborhood with a lot of violence and gangs. Since his wife died he has no other option but to communicate with the people around him (neighbors mostly). As the book says this is considered his†¦show more content†¦Thao struggles to develop his identity because he isn’t really considered the man of the house yet and he refuses to join a gang which has become the new role of boys in the Hmong culture living in the United States. Throughout the movie we see Walt having problems with the younger generations as well. During Walt’s wife’s funeral Walt see’s the way his granddaughter is dressed and instantly disapproves with a grunt of frustration. This is a pop culture reference and it helps us show how Walt is disconnected with those elements of culture he doesn’t agree with and shows us more internal conflict with Walt. We also see a pop culture reference with Walt and his son through interpersonal conflict. In a scene at the funeral, his son Mitch and his family, leave in a hurry. The reason being is that the car they were driving was made in Japan. Walt did not appreciate this at all. The generation below him does not consider where the car was made but rather what kind of status the car will give them. This clearly bothers Walt because to him it is like running away from the battle. The conclusion was fitting as the meaningful ending to the movie and Walt’s life and was one that our culture don’t always seem to appreciate in the real world. The Centre for Green Chemistry and Green Engineering at Yale (2012a: 1) thus seeks to â€Å"advance sustainability by catalyzing the effectiveness of the Green Chemistry and Green Engineering community.† This is achieved by advancing the science, raising awareness, catalyzing implementation and preparing the next generation. The Centre thereby supports the research and development of the science by acting as a catalyst to the green engineering and chemistry communities. Risk assessment practices are also being adopted so that the environmental impacts of certain toxic chemicals can be measured and so that a determination as to which chemicals need to be eliminated or avoided can be made. Engineers also â€Å"assess feed and recycle streams based on risk and not volume within a chemical process and design greener products and processes† (US Environmental Protection Agency, 2011: 1). All of these processes evidently contribute to the development of a sustainable environment which helps to eliminate global warming. The green engineering principles, as established by Anastas and Zimmerman (2003: 94), have been welcomed by all and as asserted by Abraham (2006, 8); â€Å"the Principles of sustainable engineering provide a paradigm in which engineers can design products and services to meet social needs with minimal impact on the global ecosystem.† This is highly desirable given the concerns surrounding global warming and whilst the principles do not provide engineers with a definitive process for creating a sustainable product, they do provide them with a conceptual framework that can be followed when developing new products and services. This is important not only for present generations but also for future generations because as noted by Bell and McGillivray (2008: 55); â€Å"sustainable development meets the needs of the present without comprising the ability of future generations.† Consequently, unless the environment is kept as naturally as possible through the prevention of pollution, future generations will suffer and sustainability will not be maintained. Further regulation of this area is needed so that the concepts aimed at helping the environment are upheld. This is because, it cannot be determined at present whether the green concepts are being adhered to and unless individuals fully co-operate, individuals and organizations will continue to damage the environment. Essentially, the uses of toxic chemicals are major causes for concern and unless the environment is managed more effectively, pollution will continue to ensue. More stringent regulatory practices could be implemented so that the use of toxic chemicals is minimized by adopting the concepts of green engineering and green chemistry. A sustainable environment would be created if this were to take effect because as put forward by Lancaster (2010: 304): â€Å"The chemical industry is a key solution provider on the road to sustainability.† He went on to further add that: â€Å"An independent study has shown that, on average, for every tonne of greenhouse gas emitted during chemical production three tones are saved by society by using products of the chemical industry† (Lancaster, 2010: 304-305). This clearly highlights the advantages the chemical industry can bring to the environment and illustrates that green engineering and green chemistry do help alleviate global warming and environmental pollution. The impacts of the chemical industry would, nevertheless, be greater if more efficient regulation was in place which signifies the need for change within this area. Conclusion Overall, global warming and environmental pollution caused from toxic chemicals has been extremely concerning in recent years. This is because, unless the problems associated with the environment are addressed, a sustainable environment will not be maintained. This will not only affect the present generation but it will also affect future generations. A youngster spending time on social networking on a computer doesn’t realize that he is emitting two hundred fifty kilograms of Carbon dioxide every year. These all will invite doom. Sulfur dioxide will combine with clouds and sulfuric acid would rain. The reaction of sulfuric acid with life would turn the latter into pillars of carbon. Due to rise in temperature, our lakes and seas would evaporate. Our monuments would fall. To prevent ourselves from doom, we should use everything sustainably. Now, what is sustainability? It means the use of resources judiciously so that they sustain for the generations to come. Let’s map a dream city that is sustainable and comfortable. The main issue that is swallowing most of the natural resources and emitting a huge amount of heat and harmful gases is the production of electricity from power plants. These days, most of the electricity for domestic and industrial use is being created from the combustion of coal. Coal is a fossil fuel and may end up soon if used in excess. Besides when burnt, it gives out many poisonous fumes including oxides of sulfur, nitrogen and carbon monoxide. It also gives out CO2, a greenhouse gas. We can use nuclear energy to reduce the emissions of poisonous fumes but may not be able to reduce CO2 content. The other options that arise are solar and wind energy, but they are a diffused source and not permanent. Hydroelectric energy and tidal energy is also getting famous and are also good alternatives. Then arises the second most alarming issue, that is, pollution by automobiles. Petroleum is quite polluting and limited fossil fuels. One good alternative of this may be hydrogen. Hydrogen is one of the most abundant element on Earth and the fuel with one of the highest caloforic value. But it may seem bulky plus it is highly explosive. CNG and LPG are also good fuels but are also a part of fossil fuels. Third issue is the increase in usage of non – biodegrable materials such as plastics and synthetic fibres. Currently, usage of paper bags and jute bags is suggested to be the best. The last prominent issue is the scarcity of water. Water is being used in excess and soon potable water may perish. Explaining Regional Integration

Question: Scholars of international relations disagree about the reasons that lead states to pursue regional integration arrangements. What theory best explains the creation of ASEAN? Why? Given the theoretical approaches that we have read, do you believe that the members of ASEAN are likely to pursue deeper integration in the future? Why, or why not? Answer: Economic regionalism has seen a considerable growth in the recent years because of the problems generated by disagreement and interest. Globalization is one of the notable characteristics of the modern system at the international level. Very few members were involved in the World Trade Organization Agreement in the year 2005. The South Asian countries lacked the arrangement of regional security. Therefore, the need for creation of ASEAN arose. There are theories that explain the creation of ASEAN (Acharya and Amitav 2014). Neoliberalism indicates to an approach that goes by the theory that the States are and must be bothered primarily with the absolute gains than the relative gains to the other states (Przeworski and Adam 2014). This theory is the main institutional theory in the predominant theory of international relations of North America. The theory defines organizations as to be made and maintained by the states for serving their interests. The organization has been gaining an advantageous situation since its emergence. ASEAN is at crossroads in the recent times (Cai and David 2014). Its purpose that was set initially has been attained, and this has prevented Southeastern part of Asia from the occurrence of wars any further which followed the Indochina Wars. More than any Asian institutions, ASEAN tried in promoting trade for free in the regional areas, liberalizing the critical markets, and make Asia to independently take care of the economic crisis that would occur in the future. ASEAN might integrate new and many members of the system in the future which could be difficult than to absorb the mainland nations of Southeast in the era of the 1990s. Even though the ASEAN aims at strengthening its secretariat and ends its agreement of free trade, it must not be accepting new members (Henderson and Jeannie 2014). Augmentation can be determined with the help of consent of the present members, and the member states of ASEAN have been unsuccessful in agreeing to extend the participation to East Timor that turned out to be a nondependent nation in the year 2002. It has inculcated Laos, Cambodia and Myanmar, those three countries that have fewer officials who are equipped in playing a pivotal role in the meetings of the ASEAN. Hence, the richer members of the ASEAN have started worrying that even though Laos and Cambodia have not yet bigger and modern foreign services, the addition of East Timor would be burdening the institution further, slower the pace of the meetings and enhance the level of difficulty of falsifying the consensus. The people who had objected also worried that by extension of the access to East Timor, the ASEAN may strongly give out signals to the other countries of that area that they might join. Even though, the ASEAN had supported Indonesia, which was the largest member state of the ASEAN, the chances of East Timor for extension look bright for the coming ten years. The members of AS EAN believe in institutional theory and therefore, they do not listen to the member states having fewer officials. The organization was stirred in the year 1997. However, it was not totally shaken by the financial crisis in Asia. Therefore, the association was galvanized and they thought of deepening the integration and projecting their managerial and socialization process in Northeast Asia (Henderson and Jeannie 2014).
